Women’s Initiative Donors Enjoy Knowlton Ice Museum

Posted on July 17, 2009

Women’s Initiative donors and guests had the pleasure of touring Downtown Port Huron’s newest gem, the Knowlton Ice Museum.  The July 17th reception provided an opportunity for Women’s Initiative donors to bring guests and learn how their focus on education is helping youth succeed throughout St. Clair County.

Denise Brooks, Chair of the Women’s Initiative, provided highlights of how lives have been impacted throughout St. Clair County.  So far in 2009, eight Family Read Nights have provided at-risk elementary kids with a positive fun family evening and handed out over 2,000 books to kids in Algonac, Marysville, Port Huron and Capac.  Middle school is a challenging time for students and the Women’s Initiative wanted to help students succeed during this transitional time.  In partnership with the Education Task Force, the Women’s Initiative helped over 6,000 middle school kids succeed in math through technology grants.  The Back to School backpack give-a-way program gives donors an opportunity to experience hands on philanthropy.  This year the goal is to help 3,300 low income kids have a successful start to school with a free backpack full of school supplies.

Lynn Borg, Vice President of the Community Foundation, shared the story of how the Knowlton Family’s established an endowment fund to ensure the Ice Museum’s doors are open for future generations.  Contact Lynn to learn more about how the Foundation can help you achieve your charitable goals through a planned legacy gift.

Downtown Port Huron’s Cindy Babisz filled guests in on what to do in the area including the Boats, Balloons and BBQ festival.  The shopper shuttle transport participants to their downtown dining and shopping destinations.

The event was organized by the Women’s Initiative Donor Relations Committee; Mary Whaling, Jill Brion, Kathy Emery, Kathy Holth, Gigi Mericka and Janice Whipple.
