To Celebrate our Libraries…
Posted on October 15, 2009
Once upon a Wednesday morning, the Marine City Library’s activity room is filled with young children and their caregivers. It’s time for Lapsit, a thirty-minute program of short stories, finger plays, songs and nursery rhymes for children 1 to 3 years old.
Lynn and Carol, lead the children in the first song, “Head, shoulders, knees and toes.” Other activities teach colors, shapes, numbers and the alphabet. They feature language development, listening and social skills. Tots who are shy and sit on Mother’s lap, leave her side to interact with other children after just a few weeks at Lapsit. Today, most are in the middle of the room. Twenty-two little voices are talking; twenty-two little bodies are busy popping up and down with energy and enthusiasm.
After Lynn shows a picture book she announces, “We need to sing and move around.” Carol helps her gather the group into a circle where they play “Ring around the rosy.” Some fall down and some wander away from the circle. By the end of Lapsit, not many are sitting and only one or two are still on laps.
Lapsit is one of the St. Clair County Library System’s programs for children, teen and adults. These programs will be enhanced and expanded through grants from the Library Endowment Fund.
Lapsit is just one of the many programs the endowment fund makes possible to enrich the St. Clair County Library System experience for its patrons. Other goals include:
- Help create new programs for all ages
- Purchase new information and entertainment media to enrich future collections
- Provide special events and services for generations to come
- Improve quality service
- Create a welcoming atmosphere for patrons
- Establish a secure source of revenue independent of operating funds
