St. Clair Unveils New Tennis Court Complex

Posted on July 2, 2018

The East China School District will celebrate the opening of its new tennis court complex Wednesday, July 11th at 5:30pm at St. Clair High School.

The new complex includes eight brand new courts and fencing.  The new complex was funded entirely by private donations and has been named “Our Community Courts at St. Clair High School.”

Funding for the project was kicked off with a major grant from the St. Clair-based endowment funds of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County.  Much of the assets in these endowments were generated years ago through the success of Diamond Crystal Salt.  Other gifts included an additional $126,000 from 60+ other donors, including the Rotary Club of St. Clair, United States Tennis Association (USTA), and Cargill.  In total, over 63 businesses, organizations, and individual donors contributed in addition to the endowed funds of the Community Foundation.

“This project came to fruition because of the many businesses, organizations, and individuals who provided financial support,” Lezlynne Moore, a board member of the St. Clair-based endowment funds at the Community Foundation, said.  “It truly is a result of the local community coming together to make this possible.”

The previous seven tennis courts were deteriorated, unsafe, and unusable.  Both St. Clair High School’s boys’ and girls’ tennis teams were unable to host any home matches over the past few years due to the poor condition of the courts.

“Tennis is very popular in St. Clair, so it is no surprise that the community rallied to support the construction of these new tennis courts,” said St. Clair High School Tennis Coach Dave Clutts.  “Not only will the high school tennis teams make use of the new courts, but adults, children, and families will all benefit from them for many years to come.”

The ceremony will include a tennis ball toss on to the new courts by donors, players, and community members, as well as the unveiling of permanent plaques to recognize donors who contributed to the project.

The Community Foundation of St. Clair County is the region’s largest and oldest grantmaking institution.  It administers more than 200 endowment and project funds with total assets under management of $75 million.
