Scholarship recipient gives back

Posted on November 14, 2016

It’s the season for giving and one scholarship recipient is giving back to the fund that gave to him.

Christopher Penzien recently gave $250 to the Community Foundation’s Howard A. Acheson Memorial Scholarship Fund, which brings the fund full circle.

Penzien was one of the first recipients of the Acheson scholarship, which was created in 1998 by Dr. James Acheson in memory of his father, Howard Archibald Acheson. Penzien received a total of $9,000 from this fund between 1998 and 2000.

Since its creation, the Howard A. Acheson Memorial Scholarship Fund has given away $527,398 to more than 148 students studying chemistry or engineering.

Penzien credited the scholarship with allowing him to focus his time and efforts on his studies and he graduated from Grand Valley State University with honors in 2002.

He also got a chance to personally thank Dr. James Acheson at the Community Foundation’s annual dinner in October. During his speech, Penzien stressed the importance of giving back.
