Riverwalk Restoration to begin in September

Posted on July 30, 2012

The Blue Water Land Fund, a subsidiary company of the Community Foundation, expects work to begin on shoreline restoration this September for the Blue Water River Walk.  The Land Fund recently accepted a bid from Raymond Excavating, Marysville, in the amount of $130,000 to begin the first phase of shoreline restoration.  Their work will commence in early September and target a stretch of shoreline in front of the YMCA.

According to Doug S. Touma, Chair of the Land Fund, this is the first of several contracts that will be awarded over the next 18 – 24 months as work begins in earnest to naturalize and restore the Desmond Landing shoreline as a part of the new Blue Water River Walk.

The River Walk was made possible last December when philanthropist James C. Acheson donated the entire shoreline to the Community Foundation to preserve it in perpetuity for public good.  For almost 100 years this stretch of the St. Clair River was unsafe and off limits for public access, recreation and tourism.  The Community Foundation intends to change that forever through the creation of the Blue Water River Walk, which is modeled somewhat off the highly successful Detroit River Walk.
