RESA Career Academy receives $20,000

Posted on July 14, 2017

For some, school isn’t out for the summer. RESA’s Career Academy is currently hosting 48 at-risk students with help from a $20,000 grant from the Community Foundation’s James C. Acheson Fund.
The Career Academy provides a multi-year, tiered approach to helping high absentee and potentially non-college-bound students explore careers and learn the skills necessary to get and hold a job.

Students entering this voluntary two-year program have finished 8th grade and are getting ready to enter 9th grade. For two weeks a summer they travel to the RESA Technical Education Center, studying construction trades and culinary during their first summer, and digital media and health careers in their second summer.

Students must keep their grades up during freshman year to be eligible to attend the second summer session. Students who successfully complete both sessions and maintain their grades at school are then guaranteed a spot in the TEC program of their choice.

“These kids will flourish,” said Pat Yanik, director of career and technical education at RESA. “You’re looking at kids willing to give up their time for two weeks over two summers. They have been great kids. We’ve had high attendance, and not a single bad behavior incident.”

The grant from the Community Foundation made it possible for the academy to double in size. Now in its third year, Career Academy has broadened its reach to include all of St. Clair County – every high school has at least one student representative. It was previously limited to Port Huron High.

This summer’s academy has 14 returning students and 38 new students. The first ever Career Academy had 24 students – 12 have successfully met all the academy’s requirements and will be moving on to TEC this fall.
