New Orleans Saints player and Community Foundation team up

Posted on December 2, 2016

An NFL player with hometown ties to St. Clair, Michigan is among dozens of players throughout the league who will promote philanthropy during their games this weekend.

Tim Lelito, an offensive guard for the New Orleans Saints, has teamed up with the Community Foundation of St. Clair County to take advantage of the NFL’s My Cause, My Cleats campaign.

“I think this is huge,” Lelito said. “We all know how tightly enforced the NFL uniform codes are and so to have this opportunity is great. Growing up in Michigan, without much money, neither I nor the kids in my area could really afford the equipment needed to play a particular sport.  Now that I am able to provide for kids in those same situations today, I can assist kids who would not be able to afford uniforms, practice equipment, or other needs under Michigan’s Pay-to-Play requirement, where each sport a kid wishes to participate in requires $150 to cover their needs.  My foundation, Lelito’s Legacy Foundation, can now support them.”

During the Saints game this Sunday against the Detroit Lions, Lelito, will proudly showcase his customized Lelito’s Legacy Foundation cleats. The My Cause, My Cleats initiative, or “Cleats Week” as CNN Sports has dubbed it, is a culmination of collaborative work between the NFL and players across the league, and it includes an online storytelling platform, in partnership with The Players’ Tribune.

All NFL players will have the opportunity to raise funds for the cause of their choosing by auctioning their cleats off at NFL Auction. One hundred percent of funds raised will be donated to charities selected by players.

The Lelito Legacy Foundation Fund is a component fund of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County.

“It’s our honor to work with such a fine young man like Tim who is so passionate about his community and giving back,” said Jackie Hanton, vice president of the Community Foundation. “He’s been blessed to play in the NFL and in turn wants to benefit kids in the community where he grew up.  His community foundation is proud to help him with his philanthropic goals.”
