New artwork in progress on river walk

Posted on September 30, 2015

Kevin SThe newest piece of public art along the Blue Water River Walk is underway and will be completed by mid-October.

Artist Kevin Sudeith will be onsite carving two images, called petroglyphs, into a large boulder that has been placed just south of the ferry dock.

Sudeith takes this ancient artform and infuses it with contemporary life. Traveling alone and meeting diverse people along the way, Sudeith documents their lives, their stories and their work in the most permanent way. Each petroglyph is site specific and composed of images of the nature and endeavors near the petroglyph site.

The boulder was donated by Rock N Wood Supply Yard and provides the perfect canvas for Sudeith’s work.

Sudeith will be carving Monday through Friday during the day over the next few weeks. While he is working, visitors can stop, observe and ask questions about his work.

Sudeith received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he has lived for the past 20 years.

His work has been featured at the Earl McGrath Gallery and Charles Cowles Gallery, both in New York City, and Gallery Paule Anglim in San Francisco. He had his first New York City solo exhibition in 2014, which was featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Hyperallergic.

He has been making rock art since 2003, and his journey is chronicled on his website, petroglyphist.com.

The Blue Water River Walk is already home to two other pieces of public art, Stella the Sturgeon and Sugar the Iron Horse were both placed along the river walk in the summer of 2014.
