Green Read & Ride pilot program comes to Avoca Elementary

Posted on April 14, 2016

This spring, Avoca Elementary School will have the first “green” Read & Ride program in the country! An entire classroom of 26 green microcycles will be installed in May.

The Green Read and Ride program is designed to achieve the triple objectives of improving reading proficiency, increasing physical activity and fitness, and getting t kids interested in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) elements underlying the bicycle’s construction and purpose.

“Green Read and Ride will give the additional physical activity to students that may, otherwise, not be afforded the opportunity on a regular basis,” said Therese Damman, principal at Avoca Elementary. “Further, the time spent in the Read & Ride room will greatly increase their daily exposure to books and reading. This addresses both the lack of physical activity and helps with the word gap experienced by many children.”

Green Read & Ride was inspired by the national Read & Ride program started by Scott Ertl in North Carolina.

Community Foundation of St. Clair County trustees Dr. Sushma Reddy and Dr. Randa Jundi-Samman were so excited to create a local program that research led to finding the green micro gym concept. With prompting from Dr. Sushma Reddy, the Community Foundation set out to see if we could get green microcycles customized for our local program.

The green microcycles will include not just the bicycle, with its flywheel, generator, power meter display and grid-tie inverter, but a front-mounted book or tablet holder as well. This will allow students to produce their own electricity while getting in their reading and exercise at the same time.

Adam Boesel, the Green Microcycle creator, said, “We aren’t just shooting arrows in the dark here either. Research shows that Read and Ride programs increase reading proficiency in elementary school students. We wanted to take it further, though. Adding my custom Green Microcycle to a traditional Read and Ride program, we can get kids to exercise, learn about STEM topics, increase reading proficiency, AND produce electricity!”

The Community Foundation is excited to help bridge the gap between learning and exercise - one child at a time.

Thanks to our very special donors who made the Green Read & Ride pilot program possible!
