Grants total over $2.1 million in 2016

Posted on January 9, 2017

Last year proved to be a busy time for our grant-making committees with grant totals exceeding more than $2.1 million, making 2016 one of the top years for granting in the Community Foundation’s history.

Grants covered everything from arts and culture to education to nonprofit support. The largest percentage of grant dollars went toward the Foundation’s top two priority areas: Community and Economic Prosperity ($681,000+) and Cradle to Career ($462,000+).

In community and economic prosperity, grants helped with projects all over the county like the Black River Walk pavilion, the Marine City hotel, docks at the St. Clair Boat Harbor and a multipurpose court in Emmett. The Foundation also awarded $30,000 to bring home college graduates Chelsea Beeler Khabbaz, Muray Darling, and David and Lindsay LaBelle.

Grants targeting Cradle to Career support education and job training. Robotics was a common theme with support going to Algonac Community Schools, Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, Marysville Middle School and St. Clair High School for their robotics clubs. The Foundation also granted $2,000 for the FIRST Robotics district competition hosted at Marysville High School this spring.

Other highlights include:

  • $314,000+ for nonprofit capacity building and support. Grant dollars helped organization such as Blue Water Development Housing, Safe Horizons, United Way of St. Clair County, the People’s Clinic and the Council on Aging, which all address basic needs in the community. Council on Aging and the People’s Clinic are supported annually by an estate gift from Helen David.
  • Healthy Lifestyles received $194,000+ in grants with the most going to Algonac Community Schools for the Fueling the Future pilot program.
  • East Shore Leadership Academy received $10,000 for playground equipment.
  •
  • The St. Clair Art Association also received $10,000 for an interactive art pod at the Belle River access site.
