Gerry Kramer Spartan Fund grants $15,000!

Posted on September 2, 2016

On the day that Michigan State Spartans take the field for their season opener in football, the “Gerry Kramer Spartan Fund” is proud to announce a $15,000 grant to support façade improvements for the new SC4 fieldhouse.

“On behalf of the college, we are grateful for this generous gift,” SC4 President Dr. Deborah Snyder said. “The improvements to the outside appearance of the Fieldhouse and opportunities for seasonal tower lighting will enhance and beautify both SC4’s campus and downtown Port Huron.”

The College is investing $3,000,000 in the initial phase of the SC4 Field House project.  Grant support for the façade improvements will enable the College to make signature improvements to enhance the downtown.  The College plans on using the facility to house current athletics which brings teams from across Michigan, Ohio and Ontario for home games.  In addition, the College plans on hosting collegiate athletic tournaments and youth team tournaments which will also bring more patrons to downtown.  In fact, the College recently received the bid to host the first round of the CC basketball tournament in March of 2017 and 2018.  The tournament brings up to 16 teams to the area for a multiple day tournament.  Winners of the tournament go on to compete at a national site for finals.

Gerry Kramer said “I never would have imagined that my façade grant program could help my alma mater (SC4) that transferred me to Michigan State!”

The façade grant funds will help key components of the fieldhouse project such as replacement of lobby windows on the south facing of the SC4 Fieldhouse and installation of a new sign on the south face of building. Replacement of SC4 Tower up-lighting to replace failed lights and to add energy efficient lighting is planned.  In addition, replacement of the top of tower light which has not been lit for years is scheduled.  The SC4 Tower lighting includes a feature addition of color lights inside the observation deck for special event recognition lighting.

Jackie Hanton, the vice president of the community foundation, said “We love helping Gerry achieve his charitable goals through his donor advised fund. Gerry’s Spartan Fund Façade Grant program is making visible positive impact in downtown Port Huron.”

Donor advised funds at community foundations allow donors and/or their family members to continue their personal philanthropy while utilizing the staff and resources of the community foundation. It’s a perfect vehicle to allow donors to centralize their charitable giving and have support for their philanthropic efforts.
