Fort Gratiot Light Station undergoing restoration

Posted on July 26, 2018

Friends of the Fort Gratiot Light Station and St. Clair County Parks and Recreation partnered together to create the Fort Gratiot Light Station Fund.  The fund was established to support the long-term growth and success of the Fort Gratiot Light Station.  Support includes restoration, preservation, maintenance and upgrades to buildings and grounds, permanent signage or amenities.

Since 2016, grants totaling over $100,000 have been awarded to support the restoration efforts.  Some of the improvements include electrical work and chimney repair on the Fog Signal Building, new windows and floor repair to the Keepers Duplex building and extensive restoration work on the Lighthouse.

Although the Blue Water SandFest event is the main fundraising source for the restoration efforts, individual donors may also support the success and ongoing restoration efforts of the Fort Gratiot Light Station by making a gift to the Fund.

The park is located next to the Coast Guard Station in Port Huron and includes the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, which is the oldest lighthouse in Michigan.  It is one of seven iconic Michigan lighthouses that will be featured on limited edition cans of Vernors.
