First quarter grants exceed $650,000

Posted on March 27, 2018

Grants and awards from the Community Foundation of St. Clair County have already topped $650,000 in the first quarter of 2018.

“We’re off to a very busy start to this year,” said Mike Cansfield, board chair.  “We’re excited to see the work and passion of our donors and endowed funds come to fruition across a wide spectrum of programs, projects and organizations.”

Cansfield said dozens of grants have been awarded to a wide spectrum of causes and projects that stretch from Algonac to Port Huron.  “Our donors and their endowed funds make grants twelve months a year,”Cansfield added. “It seems like their outlook and enthusiasm remains high for charitable giving in St. Clair County.”

Some of the highlights of the Community Foundation Grants include:

  • $8,000 to the Port Huron Police Department for their Hometown Heroes program from the Emily Bigelow Fund
  • From unrestricted endowment funds—$20,000 to support the National Antique & Classic Boat Show which comes to Michigan for the first time later this summer with a major event in Port Huron
  • $9,000 in Marine City to support a new outdoor mosaics project by the Historical Society of Marine City from the Blue Water Arts Committee
  • $25,000 to the Algonac Clay Township Historical Society to support facility improvements to the Maritime Museum, also from the Foundation’s pool of unrestricted funds
  • $8,000 in funding split between the SONS organization along with Capac and Memphis Schools for college tours
  • $50,000 to Mid-City Nutrition to support their new facility project – also from unrestricted funds
  • $8,000 for Port Huron Civic Theater from the Blue Water Arts Committee
  • “This round of grants in particular show the value and importance of those endowed funds we manage that are totally unrestricted,” Cansfield said. “Today’s priorities may not be tomorrow’s, but
our unrestricted funds will always be here to address pressing needs and promising opportunities locally.”
