Education Programs Receive $52,000

Posted on May 14, 2009

The Education Task Force awarded $52,000 in grants for programs designed to help kids be successful in school and focus on college.

Eleven Middle Schools in St. Clair County received a $4,500 grant for technology designed to help students succeed in math.  Dr. Sushma Reddy, Co-Chair of the Education Task Force stated “The grants were a direct result of the Middle School Survey conducted by the Women’s Initiative.  We asked educators what would help middle school students be successful and they put math and technology at the top of the list.  This technology is research based and will directly impact students and help them be prepared for college.”  Algonquin, Capac, Central, Chippewa, Fort Gratiot, Holland Woods, Marine City, Marysville, Memphis, St. Clair and Yale Middle Schools received a $4,500 technology grant.

In partnership with the EDA, SC4 and Baker College a mobile billboard campaign received $2,000.  This summer the “diddly squat” and “Economic Stimulus? Go to College” billboards will be seen in parades and on sight at community events.  The billboards are designed to increase community awareness on the importance of going to college.

St. Clair County RESA received $500 for a program that encourages students to pursue higher education.

The Education Task Force at the Community Foundation is comprised of 29 community members throughout St. Clair County.

That is great news. I know that many of our students struggle with math.  The technology gramt to help middle schoolers will be very valuable. Students all have different learning styles and the addition of new teaching software or internet programs is another useful and viable option.
