Community Renaissance Program

Posted on July 20, 2005

Now nearing the end of it's third and final year, the Community Renaissance Program (CRP) has been an unprecedented collaborative effort to restore the quality of single-family housing to the neighborhood around Woodrow Wilson Elementary School on the south side of Port Huron. Since the program was launched in 2004, the partners in the CRP have accomplished the following:

  • Built 9 new single family homes
  • Has plans to build 5 additional new single family homes
  • Restored and converted 22 homes from renter-occupied to owner-occupied
  • Demolished 17 dilapidated homes and buildings
  • Provided 22 homeowners with interest free and partially forgivable home improvement loans
  • Operated the Community House as a transitional home for the families within the boundaries of the CRP

In late 2006 construction will begin on Oak Crest Homes, the final component of the Community Renaissance Program. Oak Crest Homes is a new mini-planned community between Oak and Griswold Streets, and from 8th Street to 7th Street. Oak Crest Homes will feature 14 brand-new single family homes within easy walking distance to the waterfront and Desmond Landing.

The Community Renaissance Program has been made possible through the generous financial support of the James C. Acheson Foundation, along with:

  • Michigan State Housing Development Authority
  • Economic Opportunity Committee
  • Citizens First Savings Bank and the Citizens First Foundation
  • Regional Education Service Agency (RESA)
  • City of Port Huron
  • Port Huron Neighborhood Housing Corporation
  • Community Foundation of St. Clair County
