Cargill announced a $10,000 gift that will provide over 760 at-risk kids with backpacks and school supplies.  Cargill representative and Back to School volunteer, Nancy Ellery said that “Education is a priority for Cargill and the Back to School program focuses on helping at-risk kids succeed in school.”  she added that “With the current unemployment rate we knew the need would be greater, so, with the help of a Cargill Corporate matching grant, we more than doubled our donation this year.” Cargill volunteers know first hand the positive impact their donation and involvement in the Back to School program has on kids through out St. Clair County.

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) also increased their support to Back to School in 2009.  YAC, a group of students representing most high schools in St. Clair County, realized the economy will have a double impact on the backpack give-a-way program.  DJ Watta, second year YAC member and Back to School volunteer said that “Because of the economy, YAC felt that more kids would be in line to receive backpacks and donations may be down.”  Even though YAC’s grant budget saw a sharp decline in 2009 they elected to increase their support to $4,550 providing backpacks for 350 kids.

Thank you Cargill and YAC for getting Back to School 2009 off to a great start!

What a great way to start our 2009 event! Cargill has been a wonderful partner for the past several years.  And to all those folks who worry about the future of America’s youth I’d just point out the committment and caring of the teens on the YAC.  A good start to what is going to be a year focused on helping the most needy in our community.
