Blue Water Sturgeon Festival

Posted on May 23, 2013

The Community Foundation is proud to announce an exciting new event being held right in downtown Port Huron at the Blue Water River Walk site.

The first annual Blue Water Sturgeon Festival, brought to you by Friends of the St. Clair River Watershed, will be held on Sunday, June 2, 2013 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Great Lakes Maritime Center, with free admission and parking. It is a partnership between natural resource agencies, government, industry, scientists, and anglers focused on native fish and wildlife populations of the St. Clair River and restoring Lake Sturgeon abundance. This event will give guests of all ages the opportunity to become familiar with these “Gentle Giants of the Great Lakes” through indoor and outdoor interactive exhibits, displays, and workshops. The Lake Sturgeon is the largest fish as well as the only species of sturgeon found in the Great Lakes. This species is often referred to as a “living fossil” because it has existed, unchanged, for over 135 million years. On average, Lake Sturgeon grow to around 6.5 feet long and 200 pounds as adults, but are capable of exceeding 8 feet in length and 400 pounds. Event attractions will include live adult sturgeon viewable from the shore, live juvenile sturgeon and lamprey on display, arts and crafts, several entertaining and educational workshops, and a Huron Lady Sturgeon Cruise. During the cruise, passengers will be able to view a live video feed of Lake Sturgeon at the bottom of the St. Clair River via flat screen televisions on deck.
