Posted on May 20, 2010
Members of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) of the Community Foundation of St. Clair County surprised two St. Clair County teachers in their classrooms on Wednesday. Ms. Susan Day was chosen as the 2010 YAC C.A.R.E. (Community Awareness Reflected in Education) Award recipient. As the recipient of this award, Ms. Day has received a $3,000 grant for Eddy Elementary School. They can use the money to benefit their schools facility, classroom, students, programming, or any other special projects.
The goal of this award is to honor a St. Clair County teacher who contributes to their community by incorporating community involvement and/or charitable action into his/her classroom. The YAC received over ten nominations before narrowing it down to three finalists.
Ms. Day incorporates community involvement and charitable action into her classroom every year. Her and her students hold a number of events each year from visiting a Senior Living Center to selling cocoa packets to raise funds for the Madie Trudell scholarship fund. Ms. Day incorporates the importance of giving back to others in her student’s curriculum everyday.
Ms. Helen Taylor, who teaches the cognitively impaired students at Marysville High School, was selected as the runner up. She was awarded the $2,000 runner up award because of her dedication to her community and her students. Mrs. Taylor is the co-chair of the Marysville High School Relay for Life Team and actively involves all of her students in the fundraising and activities involved in Relay for Life. She teaches all of her students how to be a good community member and that anyone can give back and make a difference in their community.
Including this award, YAC has granted over $50,000 into the community in 2010.
