Cargill awarded $15,000 to provide over 1,150 at-risk kids with backpacks and school supplies and YAC granted $10,000 to fund 770 kids. The Foundation’s 2010 goal is to raise $42,900 to help 3,300 kids have the school supplies they need to start school.

Bill Westerhof, 5th grade teacher at Belle River Elementary School in Marine City, has spent his career helping kids succeed in the classroom. In April, after a year of planning, Mr. Westerhof launched a program designed to impact at-risk students attendance, reduce behavior issues and increase their attention span. “More and more students from low income families are coming to school on Monday hungry. We can feed them breakfast and lunch during the week, but many have little or no food on the weekends.” Mr. Westerhof found a way to break that cycle with the Blessings in a Backpack program.

Thanks to over 200 donors, 350 volunteers and community partners Back to School events in Port Huron, Algonac, East China and Capac were a joyous success.
