The Foundation has finalized $125,000 in total funding for scholarships for the upcoming 2011/2012 school year. While there are some details still being finalized, more than 70 students from St. Clair County will receive support from the Community Foundation when they begin college in the fall. Some highlights from the scholarship program include;
i. $30,500 from the Howard Acheson Memorial Fund
ii. $15,000 from the John & Rose Wismer Scholarship Fund
iii. $6,500 from the Vera Fuller Hansen Fund
iv. $6,300 from the James Wilhelm Memorial Fund
v. $5,100 from the Charles & Berniece Uligian Fund
The Community Foundation of St. Clair County is the largest provider of scholarship funding in St. Clair
County. Almost all geographic sectors of the county were represented in the current funding program, including Marine City students receiving over $22,000; Port Huron students receiving over $41,000; Algonac students receiving almost $10,000 and St. Clair students receiving just over $29,000.
Two sets of siblings are among the recipients this year; Jaclyn & Laura Richert of Fort Gratiot and Sean & Trevor Loftus of Port Huron, will each receive scholarships.
The 70+ students selected this year will be attending a wide range of colleges and universities in the fall, with the University of Michigan the top choice for 12 students, while 8 chose SC4 and 7 chose Michigan State. Other students will be attending the University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, Taylor University and South Virginia University.
