River Walk project begins!

Posted on May 12, 2011 by Randy Maiers

I’ll admit I’m inpatient.  It’s not one of my better traits.  So yesterday was very gratifying.  Thanks to the generosity of Tim Hammar and his crew from Hammar Contracting, we were able to begin some of the very early phases of the heavy clean-up.  The Hammar crew spent about 10 hours with heavy equipment removing some of the larger and more dangerous chucks of debris along the river bank.

This early clean-up of the heavy debris was critical because on May 15th we expect a volunteer group of 50+ people to come out and do a complete sweep of the entire shoreline and pick up trash and debris by hand.  Cleaning up the site is the first phase of the project, but it will take a while.  Most of the heavy work requires a permit from the DEQ that we are working on, but probably won’t have in hand until late summer of 2011.

So, with summer quickly approaching, and lots of people already down on the shore fishing and sightseeing, we at least want the shoreline clean and accessible.  It will be 2012 at the earliest before the public sees any large scale construction of the Bridge to Bay Trail or other components of the master plan.  But at least we’ve started!
